Your big day is here! Every spring, summer and fall, thousands gather to celebrate you! Here’s what you need to know to make the most of this special day.
Graduate Entry
We recommend arriving at least an hour early. Doors open 90 minutes before the ceremony. Graduates enter through Gate 4. Just follow the floor decals to the graduate entrance. You’ll need your commencement pass to get in and to walk across the stage.
Doors will close at the start of the ceremony and reopen after the National Anthem and Alma Mater.
Commencement Schedule
Commencement is held three times a year at the end of the spring, summer and fall semesters.
Doctoral Candidates & Hooding
Doctoral candidates must enter through Gate 4 and proceed to the Robing Room. Only Ph.D., Ed.D., DBA, M.D. and JD graduates participate in the hooding ceremony. Professional doctoral graduates (DNP, DPT, DAT, DDes) are recognized on stage but do not take part in hooding.
Candidates are hooded by their college dean and the provost, accompanied by their major professor. FIU policy does not allow family or guests on stage.

Look Sharp for Your Big Moment
Commencement is a special milestone, and your attire should reflect the significance of the day. Business casual clothing is recommended. Dress with confidence and celebrate in style!
Regalia
You must wear FIU’s official cap and gown. Altered regalia is not allowed. If you still need to purchase yours, cap and gown sales are available inside Gate 4.
Avoid wearing:
- Sneakers
- Beach sandals
- Shorts
