Policies & Security

FIU is committed to providing a safe environment for everyone, so we ask for your cooperation with event staff and security personnel. For the safety and comfort of all attendees, security measures will be in place during commencement ceremonies.

Security and Prohibited Items

To ensure the safety of all attendees, all graduates and their guests are asked to arrive early and cooperate with security personnel during the required checks. Please follow all instructions from police and staff for a smooth entry into the venue.

All bags will be inspected, and large bags or backpacks will not be allowed. Baby strollers must be left in the designated stroller parking area and checked upon entry.

University police officers will be on-site throughout the event. In case of an emergency or suspicious activity, contact an FIU police officer immediately or call 305-348-5911.

Prohibited Behavior & Items

Unruly, threatening or disruptive behavior is prohibited and may result in removal from the event. The following items are not allowed:

  • Large bags or backpacks
  • Firearms, knives, weapons or hazardous items
  • Incendiary devices (fireworks, smoke bombs, etc.)
  • Artificial noisemakers, including fog horns and musical instruments
  • Flags, balloons, banners, signs, laser pointers and objects that block the view
  • Illegal drugs and alcohol
  • Outside food or drinks (unless medically necessary)
  • Open bottles, cans, glass bottles, flasks, thermoses, ice bags and coolers*
  • Professional photography, tripods, monopods and selfie sticks
  • Hoverboards, skateboards, drones or remote-control vehicles
  • Animals (except certified service animals)

Graduate Dress Code

Commencement is a special milestone, and your attire should reflect the significance of the day. Business casual clothing is recommended.

Altering of gowns is not allowed. Graduates with modified gowns will not be permitted to enter the arena.

Avoid wearing the following items:

  • Sneakers
  • Beach sandals
  • Shorts
